Features and Benefits

  • Increases impact and abrasion resistance up to four times that of plain concrete
  • Provides a high density surface that resists liquid penetration and is easy to clean and maintain
  • Minimal surface dusting
  • Exterior/interior application
  • Non-fading, non-rusting colors, (Light Reflective, Tile Red, French Gray, Battleship Gray and Nile

Application

Coverage: 0.5 to 1.5 lbs per sq. ft.
(Recommended minimum application rate for colored
hardeners is 1.5 lb per sq-ft)
As a general guide to floor and slab construction, refer to American Concrete Institute Standard 302.

All work should be done under roof if at all possible. Job conditions that affect drying/setting time also affect the hardener application time. Use experienced workers for the job size. For most applications, a mechanical spreader that drops the dry shake directly onto the fresh concrete is recommended.

Preparation: Calculate the number of bags required for a given area as per the coverage rate required. Place concrete to finish grade level and compact with a wooden bull float.

Special Conditions: When slab is subjected to any condition that causes rapid surface drying such as low
humidity, wind, sunlight, etc., spray SpecFilm onto surface just after bull floating.

Placing: Application of the hardener depends on: slump of concrete, job site conditions affecting drying,
and the coverage of the hardener. Perimeter sets quicker than interior. Be aware of this and apply to edges first.

Dry-shake surface hardeners are designed to be placed after bleeding. After concrete has been screeded, tamped and floated, apply 2 /3 of coverage ratio on first application. Allow the dry-shake to darken, absorbing the moisture from the slab, then wood bull float or machine at the appropriate time. Immediately follow with the remaining 1/3 and machine float. Final finish after the slab stiffens.

To achieve maximum appearance and performance, float and finish the dry-shake so as to maintain the material on the top surface of the slab, fully integrated into the base concrete.

Edges should be worked by hand, keeping trowel as flat as possible. Blistering can occur when trowel blades have been raised too early. Re-trowel with blades lowered to remove blisters.

DO NOT ADD WATER to aid in finishing. This will weaken the surface. A hard troweled surface is recommended.

Curing: Apply an approved SpecChem ASTM C-309 compliant curing compound after final troweling.

Features and Benefits

  • Can be featheredged
  • Lifts up to 1” in thickness
  • 5 minute set time for quick turn around
  • Can be shaped
  • Excellent durability and adhesion
  • Dries to color of concrete

Application

  • Interior & exterior
  • Vertical, overhead & horizontal repairs
  • Used at no slump consistency
  • Outstanding repair material for concrete pipe, curbs, sidewalks, formed and precast concrete
  • Surface Preparation: The concrete must be sound and free of all foreign material, including oil, grease, dust, laitance or other surface contaminants. Saw cut the perimeter of the repair to a maximum depth of ½”. Mechanically abrade the surface by an engineered approved method, such as grinding, abrasive blasting, or scarifying. All surfaces to be repaired should be in a saturatedsurface-dry (SSD) condition with no standing water on the surface.SpecPatch 5 takes its initial set in 5 minutes.

Mixing: Mix 6.75 – 7.25 pints (depending on desired consistency) of clean water per 50 pound bag of material. Mix with a low speed drill. Add recommended amount of clean water into the container, followed by the SpecPatch 5. Mix 2 to 3 minutes. Mix only what can be applied within the setting period. SpecPatch 5 may be used with SpecChem Acrylic Bonder neat or mixed 1 to 1 with water per 50 pounds of powder to increase durability, abrasion resistance and bond strength. The addition of Acrylic Bonder is recommended when using SpecPatch 5 in thin, horizontal applications subjected to heavy traffic or wear.

Bond/Scrub Coat: Use the properly mixed SpecPatch 5 as a bond or scrub coat by scrubbing a thin layer into the pre-dampened substrate with a stiff brush. Place the SpecPatch 5 mortar immediately before the bond coat dries.

Placement: Trowel SpecPatch 5 firmly into the prepared area, ensuring intimate contact with the bonding surface. Use slightly more material than is needed and roughly shape during placement. After the initial set, when SpecPatch 5 is surface hard, shave the material to the desired final shape using a steel trowel. Maximum depth of neat repair mortar is 1” for each lift. Additional lifts can be placed after the original lift has achieved set. The original lift should be left with a rough surface to improve
bond between lifts.

Finishing/Curing: Finish the repair material to the desired texture to match the surrounding concrete. SpecPatch 5 is self-curing under most conditions. In severe drying conditions, use an ASTM C-309 compliant, water based SpecChem curing compound.

Coverage: approx 20 sq-ft @ 1/4”
